Rheumatoid Arthritis Biobank

Hong Kong Baptist University team is currently managing theRheumatoid Arthritis Biobank utilizing anelectronic biobank system in theScience Park of Hong Kong. The Rheumatoid Arthritis Biobank was set up by Hong Kong Baptist University in a collaboration with Shanghai Guanghua Integrative Hospital in 2013, which is the largest clinical center of joint disease in East Asia. the Shanghai Guanghua Integrative Hospital serves more than 20,000 arthritis patients per year, during which around 1000 bone and joint specimens, 3000 serum specimens and 3000 urine specimens could be collected. After 3 years' development, around 24,000 samples have been collected. Detailed information about the Rheumatoid Arthritis Biobank is descripted as follows:

1. Bio-specimens for Rheumatoid Arthritis Biobank:
All the bio-specimens are collected from patients with rheumatoid arthritis during orthopedic surgery. As the Shanghai Guanghua Integrative Hospital serves more than 20,000 arthritis patients per year, during which around 1000 bone and joint specimens, 3000 serum specimens and 3000 urine specimens could be collected. After 3 years' development, around 24,000 samples have been collected These collected bio-specimens includes blood, urine, feces, synovium, synovial fluid, bone and cartilage. All the bio-specimens are immediately stored at -80C in Thermo Scientific Forma PEEK ULT Freezers (Figure 1).

2. Infrastructures for Rheumatoid Arthritis Biobank:
Standard procedures are utilized for the collection, delivery and storage of the bio-specimens. During the process, equipment and consumables such as Thermo Scientific Forma PEEK ULT Freezer (Model No.: 88700V), Servers (Dell PowerEdge R850), Barcode Printer (BP-IP300) and Barcode Scanner (Honeywell Hyperion 1300g Scanner) are used (Figure 2).

3. Information management system for Rheumatoid Arthritis Biobank:
The HKBU team utilized an electronic biobank system in the Science Park of Hong Kong to manage the Rheumatoid Arthrits BioBank (Figure 3). The Information management system for biobank records the information about the bio-specimens, such as patient number, tissue source, collection date, etc.

During this project, we planned to continuously collect more bio-specimens such as blood, urine, feces, synovium, synovial fluid, bone and cartilage from the patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
